Please pass this along.

ATLANTA ACTIVISTS TO PROTEST SATURDAY
From Southern Voice: 12-12-08

The same Atlanta organizers who put on the Nov. 15 gay rights rally at the State Capitol hope hundreds turn out again Saturday for their next visibility action, “All I Want for Christmas is Equal Rights.”

The protest, designed to build on the momentum from last month’s event, is set for 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the sidewalks around Lenox Mall and Phipps Plaza.

“There won’t be any speakers like the last rally because it just won’t work because it’s on sidewalks,” organizer Jeff Schade told Southern Voice last week. “We are asking people to bring signs, like they did last time.

“We will have bullhorns and be leading chants, so it’s not a silent protest,” he said. “We’re stressing to keep it peaceful, keep it respectful, we’re not out to push ourselves into anything.”

The Nov. 15 rally at the State Capitol, and a vigil later the same day in Midtown, were part of a national day of protest against Proposition 8, a measure passed Nov. 4 by California voters to rescind gay marriage in the state.

“In my opinion, Prop. 8 really was a wakeup call. It really was the face of the gay rights movement of this decade,” Schade said.

“To me it was really a wakeup call to our community, as far as what we’re trying to achieve. When I look at the GLBT community we have a large community but we’re also very scattered, and so we are trying to bring the community together,” he said.
